The Dept. of Zoology, Malabar Christian College (MCC), Calicut and Prof. T. C. Narendran Trust for Animal Taxonomy jointly organized a programme on 19th September 2007 at MCC, Calicut, commemorating the 300th year of birth of Carl Von Linnaeus (1707 – 1778) the Swedish Botanist, Physician and Zoologist who laid the foundations of modern biological systematics and nomenclature.
Prof. Geetha Migael (Head of Department of Zoology, MCC) welcomed the gathering. Mr. Mohammed Rafeeque (Lecturer, Department of Zoology, MCC) presented a slide show on “Getting to know the great Taxonomist Linnaeus”. Prof. T. C. Narendran delivered a talk on “An Introduction to Taxonomy” while Dr. R. Ansari (Managing Director, Malabar Botanical Gardens), the chief guest of the day, spoke on “Linnaeus and Plant Taxonomy”.
Release of BIOSYSTEMATICA
The day also witnessed launching of BIOSYSTEMATICA, an international journal on animal taxonomy, diversity, ecology and zoogeography.
The first issue of the journal was released by Prof. Gladys P. E. Issac (Principal, MCC). The first copy was received by Dr. R. Ansari.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. (Mrs.) K. Rajmohana (Scientist, Zoological Survey of India, Calicut).
